CAIR: Practice Manual for Pro Bono representatives of unaccompanied immigrant children

CAIR - Training Manual for pro bono attorneys

The Capital Area Immigrants’ Rights Coalition (CAIR) has published a 146-page pdf manual for pro bono attorneys who will be representing unaccompanied immigrant children in legal processes for asylum, a U Visa, a T Visa, or SIJ Status.  It was produced in collaboration with Sidley Austin. It was published in January 2014.

The guide offers an overview of these various legal paths — with requirements to apply for them, the application process, adjustment of status details, state court requirements, and practice tips.

It also gives some background on how unaccompanied minors end up in the US, what their life is like in detention, and how to communicate with them.
